Once you know what is needed, it is easy to know the sea.
My co-author, Simon Haslett, and I were looking for people who had spent decades working at sea to enlighten how they had grown from apprenticeships to a ship's captain of 1,600 tons and more. Some of our sources had sea time for over 50 years.
On our website we explain how the sea works and provide guidance for those who want to work at sea for a living. This book, we hope, will inform, inspire and empower. It will provide a series of tips for survival and prosperity at sea when the job is open to anyone. No sea experience will limit you; you have one of the most important resources available to you, the level of expertise you have struggled with.
Special interviews
The four chapters of this book tell the story of those who left the earth to go to sea as students who are still learning and later become sailors. From them we learn how to get involved in maritime activities. We speak to maritime experts, from cleaners to engineers and sailors. There are sea charts that one can print. We offer safe sailing tips and tricks.

Tony Sawyers, a private marine lecturer and historian at Liverpool University, has spent 13 years doing a variety of jobs on ships ranging from coal carriers and carriers to heavy oil tanks. He is now the award-winning author for his first book ‘Abandoned on the Sea’ to be published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2014.
He was once the man of the lifeboat. What are some of these challenges?
The ability to withstand extreme conditions - although one can experience the hardships of the sea is difficult these days, as shipping has been taken over by shipping companies that specialize in shipping rather than shipping. It is now possible to do marine work that would not have been possible when I first sailed a long distance ship in the 1960's. Some shipping companies now pay their crew to attend courses that require them to finish the job of sea captain.
He joined a retailer after graduating from Cambridge. Did you make any significant mistakes when joining?
I felt a little insecure and had the misfortune of working for a company that had lost its way and became a thing of the past - I realized that their responsibility to work well and make sure the ships they were using sounded good. The ship I was joining at the beginning of my career was in dire need of a building inspection.
It was a fast boat - only 11 knots - and not as fast as it could have been - but it was a great car to try out some of the tricks and equipment we saw introduced by hackers, fishermen, lumberjacks and tropical dealers. Some of the superintendents did not take the same level of attention and detail.
Maritime activity on a cruise ship is very different from a fishing boat, a warship or a merchant ship. In any of these I have never had much opportunity to lay a temporary foundation for the ship. One of the principles that guided my decision while sailing was that the sea would be a source of guidance for the rest of my life.
I knew I wanted to write a book about sailing as a volunteer ship to provide guidance and encouragement to those looking for work in the maritime industry - be it deckhands, engineers or entrepreneurs.
The Sea Club is one of the reasons that inspired me. It was a group of volunteer sailors working on merchant ships at sea, drawing on their experience to give advice to anyone who wanted to go to sea. I learned a lot from them - but I also realized that the ocean can bring a certain amount of wealth. It is well-known that shipowners in the Mediterranean make more money in the 1800s than they do in the 1900s - especially from the sea. It is much easier to make money by sea than by land.
Are there individuals like you today?
No - more than ever, I think. Maritime work is very popular today - there are people who enjoy working on the ship. And it does not seem to matter where the ship goes, you can earn good money and have a good time.
It's not easy though. In some ships - and in some ports - working on the ship is destroyed and avoided, as was the case before. One of the reasons why the Sea Club was so popular was that everyone wanted to join - everyone was so excited to be associated with this beautiful culture.
People had to go to sea to make their way in life - or they would end up living a life of poverty. Many came from poor lands and were illiterate. Others came from stable countries like Britain or America, and they had the benefits of education and knowledge.
We spoke to a young Australian woman - she told us she had joined a maritime club so she could tell people back home in her country about the services offered by a maritime club
I'm sure his words create the impression that the maritime club should still be operating today. People still want to go.
